What to expect:
The Advanced Survey Creator Java applet is downloading to your computer now. This process will take about 2 minutes for modem connections running at 28kb.

Once the "Start the Survey Creator" button appears in the box above, click it. Within seconds the Survey Creator will appear in it's own separate window.

After the Creator is loaded, click the Start button to authenticate yourself with your username (case sensitive) and password. If you do not have a username and password, contact the webmaster for this webserver.

Survey Creator Quick Start Guide:

After logging on as described above you can:
  • 1. Review your User Profile - Click on button (with your user name on it).

  • 2. Create a new survey (Click on "Open a Survey")
Then type in the name of the new survey.

  • 3. Open existing survey (Click on "Open a Survey")
Type in survey name OR click Update
and choose survey name from dropdown listbox.

Entering the Survey Questions:
Creating a survey with the Internet Survey Creator is a very simple process documented in Chapter 6 of the Internet Survey Machine's Online Manual.

Building the Internet Survey Web Pages:
Once a survey is created, you can direct the Survey Creator to build an HTML survey form and/or a web page to launch the Java applet (Internet Respondent). These web pages are completely built after you specify a few optional settings like color definitions and graphic image links. If you want to save time, you can select from the coordinated color schemes already defined. A posting file to collect the respondent's answers is also automatically created.

The HTML and Java web pages are built by selecting the Internet dropdown menu option on the Survey Creator's main window. Once the create HTML or Java dialog box appears, select the options you want. Typically the "form action" line should not be modified, but color setting etc. should be set to your preference.

Linking to the Survey Pages:
After completing the steps above, the Survey Creator will display the http link to the survey on it's main page. You must manually copy and paste this link into your browser, or retype it. In windows based computers, you can highlight the link, and type ctrl-c to copy it to the paste buffer and then click on the URL (Address URL textbox) on your browser and do a paste. Then hit the enter key. The survey will appear in your browser's screen.

A special note on the Java creation option. This version of Survey Said supports both a Java 1 and a Java 2 based Internet Respondent for answering a survey. You can set which option you want, or you can create a web page for each version. The Survey Said Internet Respondent Java 1 edition is supported by Internet Explorer 4.01 and later and Netscape Navigator 4.07 and later. The Java 2 based Internet respondent is only supported by Netscape 6 or the appletviewer in a Java 2 JDK from Sun Microsystems.
