Word of Warning: This is a bombardment-type activity. Although I seldom used these types of activities, I found that this one in particular was enjoyed by everyone. I used it on free days. Equipment: mats, chairs, garbage cans....anything that can be used to hide behind, and a red "X" taped to the wall at the finish area, cones, 10-15 nerf balls. Grade Level: 6-12 Class Organization: Divide the class into 2 teams. Place cones on the basketball endline. Set up mats, chairs, and other equipment randomly inside the basketball court. This equipment will be used as protection for the students who are running the "gauntlet." Place a red "X" on the wall approximately 3-5 yards from the cone line. There should be mats or chairs near this "X." You will also need several students to retrieve balls. This is an extremely aerobic activity, so there will be some students who will welcome a little break! Have one team line up behind the cones. This team will be the throwers. The other team will line up at the opposite end of the gym. They are the runners. One at a time, the runners will begin to run through the gauntlet, trying to make it to the "X" without getting hit with a nerf ball. After a student has started the run and reached the 3rd obstacle, the next student in line may begin. Every student must go to every obstacle during the run. I found it easier to place them in a specific order. If a student is hit, s/he must go back to the end of the line. If a student makes it to the "X", his/her team gets a point and may return to the end of the line to run again. At the end of the time limit (3 minutes), count up the number of points. Then have the teams switch places
