Equipment: 4 hula hoops, 2-4 mats, 4 deflated or nerf balls Age group: Grades k-5 Place 2-4 mats together in the center of the gym to form the
"island." Place the hula hoops in each corner of the gym.
Designate an are for the hospital against a wall with cones or a mat. All
players gather on the island. Pick 4 players to be sharks and have them
wear a pinnie or some other identifying article (hat, tape on shirt, etc)
Place the balls one in each hoop. Sharks guard the small islands (hula
hoops) to keep the islanders from stealing the "coconuts" (i.e.
ball). Sharks cannot touch the coconuts or go inside the hoops. On signal,
the islanders try to steal the coconuts from the sharks. Islanders are
safe from sharks when they're on the big island. Sharks can tag the
islanders that leave the island and send them to the hospital. Islanders
who retrieve a ball without being tagged can go to the hospital and get
one person out. They give the coconut to the person who is first in line
and that person returns the ball to a shark and then goes back in the
game. Islanders with coconuts are safe from sharks. | ||||||||||
