     Build a Skeleton

Sports

This is a great lesson during Halloween. The students should have previously learned the names of the major bones.

Equipment - "bones", basketballs, water base markers

Grade level - 3-6

Buy one of those hang-up skeletons and trace the bones. Make several copies of complete skeletons and laminate. Divide your class into teams - the same as the number of complete skeletons you have. Spread the bones out randomly inside a basketball court, or designated area. Line up each team behind the endline, the first person having a basketball. Call out the name of a bone, and on your signal, the first member of each team should dribble their basketball out into the space and find the correct bone. They then bring it back to their team for safe keeping. Continue until you have called out all of the bones. Then signal the class to put the bones together to form a complete skeleton.

A variation would be to let the teams find all of the bones without being prompted for the names of each bone. When the skeleton has been completed, have your students write the name of each bone on the laminated pieces using the water based marker.
